How to use digital thermometers on a toddler

Taking a toddler’s temperature is a very challenging task. Often times, caregivers opt to take an infant’s temperature rectally; however a toddler’s temperature should be taken orally or under arm with digital thermometers. Ear the thermometers may also be used; however they can be tricky to use successfully. The most common method for taking a toddler’s temperature is under the arm with a digital thermometer and that is the method we are going to discuss in this article.
Before taking the temperature we will give you some important instructions. Before we take temperature we need digital thermometers and a favorite book or a favorite toy of the toddler.
Take of the toddler’s shirt or other clothing that is above the waist. Clothing may get in the way of the thermometer and cause the reading to be incorrect. Now put the toddler in your lap in a comfortable position. Give the toddler something interesting to distract him during this process. A favorite toy or favorite book that your baby likes will be very helpful for this whole process.
Put the end of the thermometer under the toddler’s arm in the armpit area. Make sure the temperature does not come out on the other side of the toddler’s armpit. Press the button to turn on the digital meter and hold it in place until the thermometer beeps to indicate it is finished.
Hold the toddler’s arm down so that the thermometer is fully touching both sides of the toddler’s armpit. If the thermometer is not within full contact with the toddler’s skin, the reading may be incorrect. Read the display. Sometimes, doctors will suggest you add one degree to an axillary temperature to get a more accurate result.
In the last step we will describe some useful tips and warning. Wait until toddler is 4 to 5 years old before attempting to take an oral temperature. If the toddler is uncooperative while awake, then take toddler’s temperature while he or she is sleeping.
